The Community of Hillsborough Animal and Agricultural Response Team (CHAART) advises to make public shelters your last resort when evacuating, and instead urges you to call upon friends, relatives, hotels, and boarding facilities for shelter. It also recommends the following preparedness tips for your pet(s):
- Proof of current rabies vaccinations (dogs, cats, ferrets)
- ID tags securely fastened to each animal
- A pet carrier with room for your animal to stand and turn around in
- A minimum 3-day supply of food, water, medicine, and waste removal for each pet
- A microchip embedded in each pet
Hurricane Preparation for Horse Owners
The Sunshine State Horse Council (SSHC) website lists resources for Hurricane/Fire Emergency Equine Evacuation Information, including:
- A searchable Emergency Evacuation Relocation List (480 + locations)
- Searchable list for temporary evacuation space
If you can offer space for displaced horses in a fire or hurricane emergency, please visit the SSHC website to add your name to the emergency resource list.
